What is VPN Software?
VPN (Virtual Private Network) software creates encrypted tunnels between devices and servers, protecting internet traffic from surveillance, tampering, and geographic restrictions. Consumer VPNs route personal internet traffic through servers in other locations, masking IP addresses and encrypting data on public WiFi networks. Business VPNs provide secure remote access to corporate networks, allowing employees to connect to internal resources from outside the office. VPN protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2) determine the balance between speed, security, and compatibility across different implementations. Split tunneling selectively routes only specific traffic through the VPN while allowing other traffic to use the direct connection. Multi-device support protects all of a user's devices—computers, phones, tablets, and routers—under a single subscription. Kill switch features block all internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, preventing accidental unprotected browsing. Server networks span dozens of countries with hundreds or thousands of server locations for choosing connection geography.

How Much Does VPN Cost?
Consumer VPN pricing is built around subscription length: the advertised per-month rate almost always assumes a multi-year prepayment, and the same plan billed month to month costs substantially more. Read the renewal terms before comparing headline rates — most providers advertise an introductory price covering the first term and renew at a higher standard price afterwards, so the number on the pricing page and the ongoing cost are rarely the same. Mullvad is the notable exception, pricing flat with no long-term discount. ProtonVPN and Windscribe run genuine free tiers limited by device count or monthly data alongside their paid plans. Business VPN products such as NordLayer and Perimeter 81 price per user per month instead, and enterprise options such as Cisco AnyConnect are quote-only. Verified per-vendor figures are in the comparison table above.

How We Evaluate VPN
VendorPick rankings are based on verified vendor pricing, transparent criteria, and feature analysis — never pay-to-play placements. Vendors cannot pay to influence their ranking or placement on our platform.
Every published price is read on the vendor's own pricing page and stored with its source URL and the date we verified it — no aggregator data, no estimates. When a vendor doesn't publish pricing, we say so; when we find a figure we can't source, we delete it rather than hedge it.
Have feedback or see something outdated? Let us know — we prioritize keeping our data current and trustworthy.
